The world number one secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the round of 16 match. Sabalenka controlled the contest and finished the match in just 80 minutes.

This meeting marked the first match between the two players since 2018. In their previous encounter, Osaka defeated Sabalenka during her run to the US Open title.

Strong Performance From the World Number One

Osaka started the match confidently with a solid opening service game. However, Sabalenka quickly settled into her rhythm and broke Osaka’s serve to lead 2-1.

The Belarusian then increased the pressure with powerful baseline shots. Her aggressive backhands helped her extend the lead to 5-2 before she closed the first set with an ace.

The second set remained competitive early on. Both players held serve until Sabalenka secured a key break to move ahead 4-2. She maintained control and served out the match shortly afterward.

Sabalenka praised Osaka’s return to form after the match. She said she was happy with her performance and felt she applied strong pressure throughout the contest.

Next Challenge in the Quarter-Finals

Sabalenka, who finished runner-up at the tournament last year, now moves into the quarter-finals. She will face either Victoria Mboko or Amanda Anisimova in the next round.

Meanwhile, Australian player Talia Gibson achieved a major milestone. The 21-year-old defeated world number seven Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

The victory marked Gibson’s first win against a top-10 opponent. She also became the first qualifier in 11 years to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals.

The tournament continues to deliver exciting matches as top players battle for the title in California.
