REAL MADRID has replaced head coach Xabi Alonso with B team manager Álvaro Arbeloa.
The club confirmed on Monday that Alonso left by mutual agreement. The decision came one day after Madrid’s 3-2 loss to FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.
Alonso’s tenure lasted less than eight months. The former Madrid and Spain midfielder faced growing pressure as the team struggled to find consistency. Reports suggested tension inside the locker room. He reportedly had disagreements with players, including Vinícius Júnior.
In a statement, Real Madrid thanked Alonso for his effort and dedication. The club described him as a legend who always represented its values. Madrid also wished him success in the next stage of his career.
At the halfway mark of La Liga, Madrid trails Barcelona by four points. The team’s inconsistent performances increased scrutiny on Alonso’s leadership.
Arbeloa now steps into the role. Like Alonso, he is a former Madrid player. He won eight titles with the club between 2009 and 2016, including two Champions League trophies and one La Liga title. He also helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Arbeloa had managed Madrid’s B team since June. Before that, he coached several youth teams at the club. His promotion signals a move toward stability and familiarity within the organization.
Alonso joined Madrid in May with high expectations and a contract running until 2028. Before arriving in Spain, he led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga and German Cup double. He took over the German side when it was near relegation and quickly transformed it into champions.
As a player, Alonso won six trophies with Real Madrid from 2009 to 2014. He also achieved major international success with Spain.
Now, Madrid turns to Arbeloa as it looks to regain momentum and compete strongly for domestic and European titles.
