The Miami Dolphins have announced plans to release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in a move that will result in a record salary cap hit.

The decision will cost the team $99.2m (£74.2m) in dead cap money, the highest amount ever recorded in the National Football League.

End of Tagovailoa’s Dolphins Era

Tagovailoa joined the Dolphins in 2020 after the team selected him with the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft. He quickly became the team’s starting quarterback and led the offense for several seasons.

In 2024, Miami rewarded him with a four-year contract extension worth $212.4m. However, releasing him only two years into the deal created the record-breaking financial penalty.

The previous record for dead cap money occurred in 2024 when the Denver Broncos released quarterback Russell Wilson, resulting in an $85m cap charge.

Team Moving in a New Direction

Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan confirmed the decision.

“We are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position,” Sullivan said. He added that the team will release Tagovailoa after the start of the new league year.

Injuries and Recent Struggles

Tagovailoa’s career with Miami included both strong performances and injury setbacks. He considered retirement after suffering two concussions during the 2022 season.

The quarterback returned in 2023 and led the NFL in passing yards. He also helped the Dolphins reach the playoffs.

However, another concussion later that year raised concerns. His form declined during the 2025 season, and the team benched him for the final three games.

Major Changes in Miami

The Dolphins are currently reshaping their roster. The team dismissed head coach Mike McDaniel in January and appointed Jeff Hafley as the new head coach.

Miami has also released star wide receiver Tyreek Hill and agreed to trade safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets.

Sullivan said the franchise wants to build a stronger foundation and increase competition across the roster.

Another Big NFL Quarterback Exit

Tagovailoa becomes the second major quarterback to leave his team during the current NFL free agency period.

Earlier this month, the Arizona Cardinals announced they would release quarterback Kyler Murray after seven seasons with the franchise.
