DONALD TRUMP delivered a forceful and theatrical State of the Union address on Tuesday night. He declared that America is experiencing a “turnaround for the ages” and insisted the country is back on track.

Despite polls showing public frustration over economic concerns and his leadership, Trump showed no sign of changing course. Instead, he focused on energizing supporters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

A Patriotic and Political Message

Trump framed the speech as a celebration of American strength. Early in the address, he welcomed the US Olympic men’s hockey team. Lawmakers applauded as players displayed their gold medals.

He also honored military heroes, including a 100-year-old World War II veteran awarded the Medal of Honor. He praised a Coast Guard swimmer who rescued 165 people during last year’s Texas floods and received a Legion of Merit award for extraordinary heroism.

These moments added emotion and spectacle to the record-setting 107-minute speech.

Familiar Claims and Optimistic Tone

Trump opened with a confident message: “Our nation is back.” He described the US as the “hottest” country in the world.

He blamed Democrats for rising living costs but argued that his administration has improved the economy. He pointed to rising incomes, a strong stock market, lower petrol prices, reduced undocumented migrant crossings at the southern border, and easing inflation.

“Our country is winning again,” he concluded.

However, his approval rating remains around 40 percent. Many Americans continue to express concerns about affordability and economic stability.

Few New Policy Proposals

Although the speech was lengthy, Trump introduced only a handful of new ideas. He proposed retirement savings accounts aimed at working-class Americans. He also suggested a deal with artificial intelligence companies to ensure their energy use does not raise consumer electricity bills.

He renewed calls for older proposals, including:

  • A healthcare plan offering direct payments to help cover insurance premiums

  • A requirement for voters to prove US citizenship

  • A ban on issuing commercial driver’s licenses to undocumented migrants

Trump also pledged to push forward with his broad tariff strategy. This comes despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down many of his previously imposed duties.

During the address, Trump briefly shook hands with Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the court’s tariff opinion. Neither appeared to smile.

Political Stakes Ahead

The president appears to hope that a large national audience will boost public support. His message focused more on defending his record than outlining a new vision.

As midterm elections approach, the speech served as both a campaign pitch and a rallying cry. Whether it shifts public opinion remains uncertain.
