Narendra Modi has arrived in Israel for a two-day visit, his first since the Gaza war began. The trip highlights India’s growing partnership with Israel and tests its diplomatic balance in the Middle East.

Modi will address the Knesset and meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog. His schedule does not include talks with Palestinian leaders.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

India and Israel have deepened ties in defence, technology, and trade over the past decade. Modi became the first Indian prime minister to visit Israel in 2017, marking a turning point in relations.

India is one of Israel’s largest arms buyers. The two countries also cooperate closely on counter-terrorism and innovation.

Netanyahu described the visit as historic. Modi responded by saying India values its partnership with Israel, built on trust and shared goals.

A Delicate Balancing Act

Analysts say the visit also tests India’s foreign policy. New Delhi supports Israel’s security concerns. It condemned the 7 October attacks by Hamas. At the same time, India has expressed concern over civilian casualties in Gaza and continues to back a two-state solution.

India recognized Palestine in 1988. It also maintains strong ties with Iran and other Gulf nations. Regional stability matters greatly to India’s energy security and trade routes.

Tensions in the region remain high. The United States has increased its military presence amid concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme. Any escalation could affect the wider Middle East.

Experts believe Modi will focus mainly on bilateral cooperation. Sensitive regional issues may stay behind closed doors.

Political Reactions

In Israel, some opposition members have threatened to boycott Modi’s speech in parliament over domestic political disputes.

In India, opposition leaders have criticized the visit. They argue that the government risks weakening support for the Palestinian cause.

Despite criticism, analysts say the visit reflects long-term strategic planning. India seeks advanced defence technology, especially as tensions with Pakistan and China persist. Israel remains a key partner in this area.

Modi’s visit underlines India’s effort to strengthen ties with Israel while maintaining relations across the Middle East.
