The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a new recruitment campaign aimed at gamers, encouraging them to apply for air traffic controller positions.

The initiative targets young adults with strong gaming skills, as officials believe these abilities translate well into the fast-paced world of air traffic control. The campaign will run alongside the opening of the FAA’s hiring window next week.

The advertisement draws a direct connection between gaming and aviation careers. It highlights how players develop quick reflexes, decision-making skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure—qualities essential for controlling air traffic safely.

The campaign also promotes the financial benefits of the role. According to the FAA, air traffic controllers can earn up to $155,000 annually after gaining experience over several years.

Sean P. Duffy explained that the agency must adapt its approach to attract the next generation of workers. He noted that many gamers already possess the technical and cognitive skills needed for the job.

This strategy builds on a similar effort introduced in 2021, which also focused on reaching gaming communities to fill critical vacancies.

Air traffic controllers play a vital role in aviation safety. They monitor aircraft movements, guide pilots during takeoff and landing, and ensure safe distances between planes. The job requires constant focus, rapid decision-making, and strong technical knowledge.

Despite its importance, the industry has struggled with staffing shortages for years. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the gap is expected to grow in the coming years.

The FAA previously stated that it needs over 14,000 active controllers to operate at full capacity. However, the workforce remains thousands short, and many experienced controllers are expected to retire by 2028.

National Air Traffic Controllers Association has supported the initiative. Its president, Nick Daniels, said the union welcomes new ways to expand the talent pool, as long as strict safety standards remain in place.

The recruitment push comes at a time when aviation safety remains under close scrutiny following several high-profile incidents. Officials hope that attracting skilled candidates—especially from the gaming community—will help strengthen the system and ensure safer skies.
