England travel to Rome with their Six Nations Championship campaign hanging in the balance. After two heavy defeats, they must beat Italy national rugby union team to restore confidence and keep their tournament hopes alive.

England have never lost to Italy in the Six Nations. However, recent performances have raised concerns ahead of the clash in the Italian capital.

England Struggle Away from Home

England’s recent away record in the Six Nations highlights their struggles. The team has lost four of their last five away matches, matching their worst run in the competition’s history.

Since their last title in 2020, England have won only four of 13 away games. Most of those defeats came against Scotland, Ireland, and France.

Despite holding a perfect record in Rome, England face a stronger Italian side than in previous years.

Italy Growing in Confidence

Italy have improved significantly in recent seasons. They already secured a home victory against Scotland earlier in the tournament.

Players like Tommaso Menoncello have delivered strong performances. Their powerful scrum, disciplined defence, and attacking threat make them dangerous opponents.

Former England winger Ugo Monye believes Italy could challenge England more than ever.

“This match feels pivotal for England,” Monye said. “Italy are now a very strong side.”

Major Changes from England Coach

England head coach Steve Borthwick has responded to recent defeats by making nine changes to his starting lineup. He has also made three positional switches.

This is the largest number of changes made by England in the Six Nations era. The decision introduces new combinations in a must-win match.

If England lose in Rome, they could face the risk of four defeats in one championship. That has not happened since 1976.

Defensive Issues Exposed

England’s recent losses to Scotland national rugby union team and Ireland national rugby union team exposed several weaknesses.

The team struggled with slow starts, tactical confusion, and costly mistakes.

Statistics highlight the problems:

  • England conceded 24 line breaks in the tournament so far.

  • 58% of those breaks came through the 10-metre channels.

  • 30% of missed tackles occurred on the outside.

Teams have discovered that attacking quickly and using width can disrupt England’s defence.

Pressure Builds Before Rome Clash

Italy may use that same strategy in Rome. Their fast and wide style could cause more problems for England’s defence.

For England, the match now carries huge importance. A victory could rebuild confidence. A defeat would mark a historic first loss to Italy and deepen their Six Nations struggles.
