Hundreds of Afghan evacuees remain stranded in Qatar as uncertainty grows over their future following changes in US resettlement plans.

Many of them have spent more than a year waiting at Camp As Sayliyah, a former US military facility in Doha. The camp has served as a processing center for individuals evacuated after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

One evacuee, identified as Alia for safety reasons, described the situation as deeply distressing. She previously worked as a lawyer in Afghanistan and fears returning home due to safety risks. She also expressed concern about remaining in Qatar, citing rising regional instability.

The evacuees were initially relocated under Operation Allies Welcome, a program launched to support those connected to US efforts in Afghanistan. Many were promised resettlement in the United States.

However, recent policy changes under Donald Trump have disrupted those plans. Authorities announced that the camp would close and that evacuees would no longer be transferred to the US, leaving many in a state of uncertainty.

Concerns have intensified due to escalating tensions in the region. The camp is located near a major US military installation that has reportedly been targeted during recent conflicts involving Iran. This has increased fears among evacuees about their safety.

Residents describe emotional distress, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Many have appealed for urgent assistance and a reconsideration of their resettlement status.

Advocacy groups, including those led by US veterans, have voiced support for the evacuees. They emphasize that many individuals in the camp assisted US missions in Afghanistan and now face significant risks as a result.

Supporters argue that these evacuees were relocated with assurances of safety and stability. They continue to urge US authorities to provide a clear and humane resolution to their situation.

As uncertainty persists, the future of these evacuees remains unclear. Their situation highlights the broader challenges faced by displaced populations caught in shifting political and security conditions.
