The West Indies cricket team has organized commercial flights home from India following a frustrating wait after their elimination from the men’s T20 World Cup. The squad had been stranded in Kolkata since March 1 due to travel disruptions linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that the ICC-organized charter flight for both West Indies and South Africa had been repeatedly delayed. The ongoing uncertainty created a “distressing” situation for players and staff.

“In the interest of the wellbeing and safety of its players and support staff, Cricket West Indies advised the ICC that it was no longer practical to wait on the charter arrangements,” CWI said.

Several players and support staff have already departed India, with the remainder scheduled to leave on Tuesday and Wednesday. Multiple efforts were made by CWI and the players, in coordination with the ICC, to secure commercial flights for the squad.

The ICC has faced criticism from both West Indies and South African players for failing to resolve the issue promptly. England, by contrast, flew home on Saturday after their semi-final exit, which prompted accusations of bias—claims that the ICC has categorically denied.

The West Indies’ decision ensures the safe return of the squad after a tense period of uncertainty, allowing players to focus on rest and preparation for upcoming cricket commitments.
