Focus on Strait of Hormuz Reopening

According to Downing Street, both leaders stressed the urgency of fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz during their call on Friday. The conversation came just hours before key delegations arrived in Islamabad for high-stakes negotiations.

Key Leaders Arrive for Talks in Pakistan

US Vice President J. D. Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reached Pakistan as global attention turns to the outcome of the talks aimed at stabilising the region.

UK Backs Ceasefire Process

In an official statement, Downing Street said Starmer welcomed the ceasefire and expressed hope that ongoing discussions would lead to lasting peace. Both sides agreed the talks are vital to moving from a temporary ceasefire toward a long-term resolution.

The UK also reaffirmed support for diplomatic efforts, highlighting strong bilateral ties with Pakistan and a shared commitment to continued engagement.

Gulf Tour Highlights Regional Cooperation

Starmer concluded a three-day Gulf tour, during which he met leaders in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. He noted a growing willingness among regional allies to strengthen cooperation on defence and economic resilience.

Concerns Over Global Economic Impact

Speaking to UK media, Starmer warned that the conflict could have long-term global consequences, including economic instability. He also voiced frustration over the domestic impact of rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions.

His remarks included criticism of actions by Donald Trump, whose stance on the conflict has strained US-UK relations.

High-Stakes Talks in Focus

With the ceasefire in place, leaders are now focusing on practical steps to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and stabilise global markets. The outcome of the Pakistan-hosted talks is seen as critical to preventing further escalation and ensuring sustained peace in the region.
