UEFA aims to standardize VAR use across European football leagues

UEFA has announced plans to hold a summit with officials from Europe’s leading football leagues to review how video assistant referee (VAR) technology is being applied.

The meeting will bring together refereeing leaders from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.

The goal of the summit is to address concerns about excessive use of VAR and to restore its original purpose—correcting only clear and obvious mistakes.

Roberto Rosetti has emphasized that VAR should not interfere with minor or highly subjective decisions. He believes the technology risks moving away from its intended role if used too frequently for marginal calls.

According to Rosetti, VAR performs best when dealing with objective decisions, such as offside calls. However, it becomes more complicated when applied to subjective situations like fouls or handball decisions.

Different leagues currently apply VAR in varying ways, leading to inconsistencies across competitions. Statistics show that the Premier League has the lowest intervention rate this season, while other leagues such as Serie A and Ligue 1 record higher levels of involvement.

Even with fewer interventions, debates over controversial decisions continue, highlighting the need for clearer guidelines.

UEFA also wants leagues to adopt a unified approach to interpreting the rules. In particular, the governing body aims to standardize how referees handle situations like handball, which often leads to confusion among players and fans.

The upcoming summit is expected to focus on creating a consistent framework for VAR usage across all major competitions. Officials hope this will improve fairness, reduce controversy, and enhance the overall flow of the game.

As football continues to rely on technology, UEFA’s initiative could play a key role in shaping how VAR is used in the future.
