Spain has announced a major plan to legalize hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants. The policy has given hope to many people who have struggled to live and work without legal status.

Government Plan to Regularize MigrantsMigrants Play Key Role in Spain’s Economy

One of them is Diana, a migrant from Peru who moved to Spain two years ago in search of stability. Without residency documents, she has relied on occasional jobs to survive. She says employers sometimes pay less than promised or change working conditions without warning.

Living without legal status also makes everyday life difficult. Many migrants cannot open bank accounts or rent housing because landlords require official residency documents.

Government Plan to Regularize Migrants

The Spanish government plans to offer legal status to at least 500,000 undocumented migrants. Applicants will receive a one-year renewable residency visa. The application process will run from April to the end of June.

To qualify, migrants must prove they have lived in Spain for at least five months and must not have a criminal record. Officials expect a large number of applicants. Some reports suggest between 750,000 and 1.1 million people could apply.

Pedro Sánchez said migrants have played a key role in building the country’s progress. The government says the initiative reflects humanitarian values while also helping the national economy.

Migrants Play Key Role in Spain’s Economy

Elma Saiz said foreign workers are vital for Spain’s economic growth. According to government data, about 14.1% of the country’s 22 million registered workers are foreigners.

She added that since 2022, foreign workers have contributed to half of Spain’s economic growth.

Migrants fill many jobs in sectors such as agriculture, hospitality, and elderly care. Farmers and business groups say immigrant workers are essential to maintaining production and services across the country.

Experts also warn that Spain will need millions of migrants in the coming decades to support its economy and social security system. For migrants like Diana, the new policy could finally bring stability and opportunity.
