A recent survey shows that most Premier League fans remain strongly against the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee). The Football Supporters’ Association gathered responses from nearly 8,000 supporters across all 20 clubs.

The findings highlight widespread dissatisfaction with how VAR affects the game. Around 75% of fans said they oppose its use in the league. Many supporters believe the technology has failed to improve the overall football experience.

An overwhelming majority of respondents said VAR has reduced the excitement of watching matches. Over 90% felt it has negatively impacted the matchday atmosphere, especially during goal celebrations. Fans often hesitate to celebrate fully due to the fear of decisions being overturned.

The survey also revealed that viewers at home share similar frustrations. Nearly all respondents said VAR does not make watching games on television more enjoyable.

Concerns about decision-making remain a major issue. More than 70% of fans believe VAR has not improved refereeing accuracy. Many also feel that the explanations behind decisions lack clarity, which adds to confusion and debate.

Supporters expressed worries about expanding VAR’s role in the game. A large number oppose using it for minor decisions, such as checking corner kicks or second yellow cards. These planned changes have raised further concerns about delays and interruptions.

Fans also remain divided on new measures like referees announcing decisions inside stadiums. Less than half of those surveyed believe this step improves understanding or transparency.

Despite these concerns, league officials continue to support VAR. They acknowledge fan frustration but aim to improve how the system operates rather than remove it completely.

The survey reflects a growing disconnect between supporters and officials. While leagues focus on accuracy, fans value the flow, emotion, and spontaneity that make football special. Until VAR addresses these concerns, the debate around its role in the game is likely to continue.
