Lionel Messi at Inter Miami: Goals, Records, Trophies and MLS Legacy
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami has become much more than the final chapter of a legendary football career.
When Messi arrived in South Florida in July 2023, Inter Miami was still a young Major League Soccer club searching for its first trophy.
Within weeks, that changed.
Messi scored a stoppage-time free kick on his debut.
He scored ten times in seven Leagues Cup matches.
Inter Miami won the first trophy in club history.
Then came the Supporters’ Shield.
MLS scoring records.
Back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards.
A Golden Boot.
And, in 2025, Inter Miami’s first MLS Cup.
As of September 7, 2026, Lionel Messi at Inter Miami remains an active story.
He is 39, has retired from international football, and is now focused entirely on his club career. His current Inter Miami contract runs through the 2028 MLS season.
His most recent league match came against Atlanta United on September 5, when Messi assisted Casemiro from a corner in a 2–2 draw. Reuters reported that Messi remained on 18 MLS goals in 2026, level at the top of the scoring race at that point.
That makes Lionel Messi at Inter Miami one of the most important active sections of The News Ink’s Messi pillar.

Why Lionel Messi Joined Inter Miami
Messi’s move to the United States came after two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain.
His Barcelona career had already ended in 2021.
He had won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
By 2023, another European transfer was possible, but Messi chose Major League Soccer.
Inter Miami formally announced the signing on July 15, 2023.
The original contract covered the remainder of 2023 and ran through the 2025 MLS season.
The move immediately elevated the global profile of both Inter Miami and MLS.
But Lionel Messi at Inter Miami quickly became important for sporting reasons too.
He did not need months to make an impact.
He needed one match.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Scores a Free-Kick Winner on Debut
Messi made his debut against Mexican club Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on July 21, 2023.
He began on the bench.
The match was tied 1–1 deep into stoppage time.
Inter Miami won a free kick near the edge of the penalty area.
Messi stepped forward.
He curled the ball into the top corner in the 94th minute.
Inter Miami won 2–1.
It was an almost perfectly constructed beginning to Lionel Messi at Inter Miami:
first appearance,
first goal,
a direct free kick,
and a match winner.
But the Leagues Cup run was only beginning.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Dominates the 2023 Leagues Cup
Messi scored throughout the tournament.
By the time Inter Miami reached the final, he had already transformed the team.
The final came against Nashville SC.
Messi scored again.
The match finished 1–1 before Inter Miami won a dramatic penalty shootout.
The title was the first official trophy in Inter Miami history.
Messi finished the competition with:
10 goals in seven matches
He won:
Leagues Cup Top Scorer
and
Leagues Cup Best Player.
The first major period of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami therefore produced a trophy after only seven appearances.
Lionel Messi’s First Inter Miami Season
Messi joined halfway through the 2023 campaign, so the first year was relatively short.
Inter Miami’s official Ballon d’Or announcement later summarized his initial club period as:
14 appearances
11 goals
8 assists.
Ten of those goals came in the Leagues Cup.
He also scored his first MLS regular-season goal against the New York Red Bulls after coming on as a substitute.
Inter Miami did not recover sufficiently to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs.
That prevented the first season from becoming a complete domestic turnaround.
But one objective had already been achieved.
The club finally had a trophy.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Becomes Club Captain
Messi was quickly made Inter Miami captain.
The role had previously belonged to Gregore, but head coach Gerardo Martino confirmed Messi would take the armband after his arrival.
That responsibility became important.
Messi was not simply another Designated Player joining MLS.
Inter Miami structured a major sporting project around him.
Former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba joined the club.
Luis Suárez followed ahead of the 2024 season.
The result was a team increasingly designed around Messi’s technical qualities and extensive experience.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in 2024
The first full MLS season changed perceptions of what Messi could still do in the United States.
He was 36 turning 37.
He dealt with injuries and missed matches while representing Argentina at the Copa América.
Yet the output was exceptional.
Messi finished the 2024 MLS regular season with:
20 goals
and
16 assists
in only
20 appearances.
That produced 36 goal contributions.
Across all competitions in 2024, Inter Miami recorded:
23 Messi goals
19 assists
in
25 appearances.
Those numbers established Lionel Messi at Inter Miami as much more than a promotional signing.
Inter Miami Wins the 2024 Supporters’ Shield
Inter Miami produced the best regular season in MLS in 2024.
The decisive match came against Columbus Crew.
Messi scored twice.
Luis Suárez also scored.
Inter Miami won 3–2 and secured the Supporters’ Shield for the first time in club history.
The season eventually finished with:
74 points
an MLS single-season record at the time.
Inter Miami also recorded a 22-4-8 regular-season record.
The Shield became the second major trophy of the Lionel Messi at Inter Miami era.
Messi Becomes Inter Miami’s All-Time Leading Scorer
The final regular-season game of 2024 created another club record.
Inter Miami faced New England Revolution.
Messi started on the bench.
He entered during the second half.
Then he scored a hat-trick.
The performance helped Miami win 6–2 and secure the 74-point MLS record.
It also moved Messi to 33 Inter Miami goals, taking him past Leonardo Campana’s previous club record of 32.
That milestone is central to Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
A player who joined only in July 2023 had already become the club’s all-time leading scorer by October 2024.
Lionel Messi Wins the 2024 MLS MVP
Messi’s first full league campaign brought the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award.
MLS recognized his combination of scoring, assists and team success.
Inter Miami specifically cited his:
20 goals,
16 assists,
36 goal contributions,
and the Supporters’ Shield-winning 74-point season.
That award established Messi as the league’s leading player statistically and competitively.
But the 2024 season still contained disappointment.
The 2024 MLS Playoff Failure
Inter Miami entered the playoffs as Supporters’ Shield winner and one of the championship favourites.
Atlanta United eliminated Miami in Round One.
Messi scored in the decisive game, but Atlanta won 3–2.
That result matters when assessing Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
The Supporters’ Shield and points record were significant.
But the team had not yet won MLS Cup.
The biggest domestic championship remained missing.
That changed one year later.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in 2025
The 2025 season became the strongest complete campaign of Messi’s Miami career so far.
His regular-season totals reached:
29 goals
19 assists
in
28 matches.
That meant:
48 regular-season goal contributions.
Messi won the 2025 MLS Golden Boot, finishing five goals ahead of Denis Bouanga and Sam Surridge, who each scored 24.
Across all competitions, the numbers became even larger.
Inter Miami’s season review credits Lionel Messi at Inter Miami with:
43 goals
31 assists
74 goal contributions
in
49 appearances.
That is extraordinary late-career production.
Lionel Messi Wins Back-to-Back MLS MVP Awards
Messi was named MLS MVP again in 2025.
That made him the first player in MLS history to win the award in consecutive seasons.
The sequence became:
2024 — MVP
2025 — MVP
The second award was strengthened by the fact that Messi also won the Golden Boot.
He became only the second player in MLS history to lead the league in both goals and assists in the same regular season under the official league statistical framework cited by Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Sets More MLS Records
The 2025 season contained a series of league records.
Messi became the first MLS player to record:
10 multi-goal games in one regular season.
He also produced at least three goal contributions in nine different matches, another league record.
These records matter because Lionel Messi at Inter Miami is often discussed mainly in terms of fame.
The numbers show that his sporting influence was equally important.
Inter Miami Reaches the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
The Miami chapter also expanded into global club competition.
Inter Miami competed in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
The club reached the Round of 16.
Inter Miami’s own historical review notes that the campaign included a 2–1 victory over Porto, making Miami the first Concacaf club to defeat European opposition in an official competition under the club’s account of the achievement.
Messi therefore added another type of stage to his American career.
The Inter Miami period was no longer limited to domestic MLS matches.
Inter Miami Also Reaches the Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinals
The 2025 season included another international run.
Inter Miami reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
That was the club’s deepest campaign in the competition to that point, according to Inter Miami’s contract-extension review.
The club still lacked a continental championship.
But the competitive range of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami had expanded significantly from the team’s position before his arrival.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Finally Wins MLS Cup
The most important club moment came at the end of 2025.
Inter Miami advanced through the MLS Cup Playoffs and reached the final against Vancouver Whitecaps.
Miami won:
3–1.
Messi did not score in the final.
Instead, he created.
He supplied two assists, including the pass that helped Tadeo Allende score the decisive third goal.
Inter Miami became MLS Cup champion for the first time.
Messi Wins MLS Cup MVP
Messi’s playoff contribution extended far beyond the final.
Across the postseason he produced:
6 goals
and
9 assists
for
15 goal contributions.
That set a new MLS single-postseason record for goal contributions.
Messi was then named MLS Cup MVP.
The 2025 postseason completed the biggest missing domestic achievement from Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Supporters’ Shield success had arrived in 2024.
MLS Cup arrived in 2025.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami After the 2025 Season
By the end of 2025, Inter Miami’s official season review listed Messi as the club’s historic leader in both goals and assists.
His totals stood at:
77 goals
53 assists
in
88 appearances
across all competitions.
This is one of the best fixed checkpoints for tracking his Miami career.
It also allows future totals to be audited more easily.
Any 2026 additions begin from:
77 goals after 2025.
Lionel Messi Extends Inter Miami Contract Through 2028
Messi’s original deal was due to end after the 2025 season.
Instead of leaving after winning MLS Cup, he committed to a much longer future.
Inter Miami announced on October 23, 2025 that Messi had signed an extension through the:
2028 MLS season.
At the time of the extension, the club credited him with 71 goals and 44 assists in 82 appearances, totals that were later increased during the successful 2025 postseason.
The contract could keep Lionel Messi at Inter Miami beyond age 40.
That is important for both the club and this article.
His final Miami statistics remain far from fixed.
Messi Reaches 100 Inter Miami Appearances
In 2026, Messi reached another club milestone:
100 appearances for Inter Miami.
The club said he became only the eighth player in Inter Miami history to reach that mark.
This was an impressive milestone considering he joined only in the second half of 2023 and missed matches through injury and international duty.
It also emphasized how substantial the Miami chapter had become.
This was no longer a short closing stop.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Reaches 100 MLS Goal Contributions
Days after reaching 100 overall Inter Miami appearances, Messi produced another league record.
Against Toronto FC on May 9, 2026, he scored once and supplied two assists.
That took him to:
100 MLS regular-season goal contributions
in only
64 matches.
The breakdown at the milestone was:
59 goals
41 assists.
Inter Miami says Messi reached the mark 31 matches faster than Sebastian Giovinco, the previous record holder.
This is one of the strongest statistical achievements from Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in the 2026 Leagues Cup
Messi returned to the tournament where his Miami story had begun.
Against Atlético de San Luis on August 5, he scored twice in a 4–2 victory.
Those goals moved him to:
14 career Leagues Cup goals.
Inter Miami reported that Messi became the competition’s all-time leading scorer at that point, passing Denis Bouanga.
However, Inter Miami did not reproduce the title-winning run of 2023.
Its 2026 Leagues Cup campaign ended before the final.
That means the Miami trophy count did not increase through this competition in 2026.
Four Goals Against CF Montréal
One of the greatest individual performances of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami arrived on August 29, 2026.
Miami faced CF Montréal.
Messi scored:
four goals
and supplied:
one assist.
Inter Miami won:
7–1.
Messi’s goals included a direct free kick, a solo move, a chip and another stoppage-time free kick.
It was his first four-goal match in an MLS regular-season game.
Messi Reaches 20 Multi-Goal MLS Matches Faster Than Anyone
The Montréal performance created another league record.
Messi reached:
20 multi-goal MLS regular-season matches
in only:
72 league appearances.
MLS confirmed he was the fastest player in league history to reach the milestone.
The match also took his 2026 league total to:
18 goals
in
19 appearances
with:
10 assists.
That was remarkable production for a player who had turned 39 during the summer.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami After Argentina Retirement
Two days after the Montréal performance, Messi announced his retirement from Argentina.
That created a major change in his career.
For the first time since becoming a senior international in 2005, his football schedule became exclusively club-focused.
His first Inter Miami match after retiring internationally came on September 5 against Atlanta United.
Messi did not score.
But he delivered the corner from which Casemiro opened the scoring.
The match finished 2–2.
The next stage of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami is therefore also the first stage of Messi’s career without Argentina commitments.
Current Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Statistics
The most reliable way to track the live numbers is to use fixed checkpoints.
End of 2025
Inter Miami officially recorded:
77 goals
53 assists
88 appearances.
August 29, 2026
The consistent all-competition scoring methodology used by The News Ink moved Messi to:
97 Inter Miami goals.
September 5, 2026
Messi did not score against Atlanta, so the all-competition total remained:
97 goals
His 2026 MLS regular-season total remained:
18 goals.
Reuters reported him as joint top scorer at that point.
Because Messi remains active, these figures need regular updates.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami by Season
| Season | Key Messi Statistics | Major Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 11 goals, 8 assists in 14 all-comp apps | Leagues Cup |
| 2024 | 23 goals, 19 assists in 25 all-comp apps | Supporters’ Shield, MLS MVP |
| 2025 | 43 goals, 31 assists in 49 all-comp apps | Golden Boot, MVP, MLS Cup |
| 2026 | 18 MLS goals through Sept. 5 | Active season |
The progression is striking.
Messi actually became more productive in his second and third Miami seasons rather than simply declining year after year.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Trophies
Inter Miami’s club history records four titles in the Messi era through 2025:
2023 Leagues Cup
2024 Supporters’ Shield
2025 Eastern Conference Championship
2025 MLS Cup.
There is an important counting distinction.
When MLS calculates Messi’s personal career-trophy total, it treats the MLS Cup as his third Inter Miami trophy, excluding the Eastern Conference championship from that player-career methodology.
Therefore:
Inter Miami club-history titles in Messi era
4
Messi career-trophy methodology used by MLS
3 Miami trophies
That distinction should remain consistent in the separate Lionel Messi Trophies cluster.
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Individual Awards
Messi’s Miami period has already produced a major individual award collection.
| Award | Year |
|---|---|
| Leagues Cup Best Player | 2023 |
| Leagues Cup Top Scorer | 2023 |
| Ballon d’Or | 2023 |
| MLS MVP | 2024 |
| MLS Golden Boot | 2025 |
| MLS MVP | 2025 |
| MLS Cup MVP | 2025 |
The eighth Ballon d’Or was awarded while Messi was an active Inter Miami player, making him the first active MLS footballer to win the prize.
For the award history behind that achievement, the dedicated Lionel Messi Ballon d’Or page should remain the authority.
How Messi’s Playing Style Changed in Miami
The Miami version of Messi is different from the teenage Barcelona winger.
He cannot and does not need to play at maximum speed for 90 minutes.
Instead, Lionel Messi at Inter Miami relies heavily on:
- positioning;
- first touch;
- passing;
- scanning;
- set pieces;
- selective acceleration;
- combinations around the penalty area;
- disguised through balls;
- controlled finishing.
He often walks during phases of possession.
That does not mean he has stopped influencing the game.
It means he chooses where to spend physical energy.
The 2025 numbers prove the effectiveness of that approach:
43 goals.
31 assists.
74 goal contributions in all competitions.
The Return of Barcelona Connections
The Miami project also reunited Messi with several former Barcelona teammates.
Sergio Busquets arrived in 2023.
Jordi Alba followed.
Luis Suárez joined in 2024.
These relationships helped provide immediate technical understanding around Messi.
Later, Inter Miami continued to change.
Rodrigo De Paul joined in 2025.
Casemiro became part of the 2026 squad.
By September 2026, the team was also preparing for another coaching transition, with Inter Miami announcing an agreement for Cristian “Kily” González to become head coach once work authorization was completed, while Guillermo Hoyos remained in provisional charge.
The supporting cast has changed.
Messi remains the central figure.
Did Messi Make MLS More Important Globally?
Measuring global influence precisely is difficult.
But the sporting and commercial attention surrounding Lionel Messi at Inter Miami has clearly been unusual for MLS.
His signing immediately became an international story.
Away matches attracted huge crowds.
Inter Miami became recognizable far beyond the United States.
The club qualified for international competitions.
The Leagues Cup received significantly more global attention during Messi’s first season.
But the most important factor for long-term credibility is that the football produced genuine achievements.
Messi did not simply arrive.
He won.
Is Lionel Messi at Inter Miami a Retirement Tour?
That description no longer fits the evidence.
A retirement tour normally suggests reduced competitive relevance.
Messi has instead produced:
a Leagues Cup title,
a Supporters’ Shield,
an MLS Cup,
two MLS MVP awards,
a Golden Boot,
an MLS Cup MVP,
club scoring records,
and numerous league records.
His 2025 season alone produced 43 goals and 31 assists across all competitions.
That is not ceremonial participation.
It is elite production inside the competitions he is playing.
How Does Inter Miami Compare With Barcelona and PSG?
The clubs represent very different stages.
Barcelona
Messi’s peak and defining club.
672 goals.
778 appearances.
35 trophies.
Read Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
Paris Saint-Germain
A two-season transition after Barcelona.
32 goals in 74 appearances.
Domestic success but no Champions League title.
Inter Miami
A late-career reinvention.
Messi became both scorer and creator inside a rapidly developing club.
He helped deliver several of the most important trophies in Inter Miami history.
That is why Lionel Messi at Inter Miami deserves a separate article rather than simply being treated as the closing paragraph of his career.

Conclusion: Lionel Messi at Inter Miami Became a Competitive Legacy, Not a Farewell Tour
Lionel Messi at Inter Miami began with one free kick.
July 21, 2023.
Cruz Azul.
Stoppage time.
Messi curled the ball into the top corner.
Inter Miami won.
It looked like the perfect opening scene.
What followed made the beginning more meaningful.
Messi scored ten goals in seven Leagues Cup matches.
Inter Miami won the tournament.
It was the first trophy in club history.
The first half-season ended with:
11 goals,
eight assists,
and 14 appearances.
Then came the first full MLS campaign.
Twenty regular-season goals.
Sixteen assists.
Thirty-six direct goal contributions.
Inter Miami won the Supporters’ Shield.
The club finished with a record 74 points.
Messi became Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer and won MLS MVP.
Still, the 2024 season had an obvious weakness.
The team did not win MLS Cup.
Atlanta eliminated Miami early in the playoffs.
One year later, that gap disappeared.
The 2025 version of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami was even more productive.
Twenty-nine regular-season goals.
Nineteen assists.
Golden Boot.
A second straight MVP.
Then six goals and nine assists during the playoffs.
Fifteen postseason goal contributions.
MLS Cup.
MLS Cup MVP.
Across every competition that year, Messi produced:
43 goals
and
31 assists
in
49 matches.
By the end of 2025, his Miami record had reached:
77 goals
53 assists
88 appearances.
Those numbers alone ended the idea that Messi had travelled to MLS simply to wind down his career.
Then came 2026.
He reached 100 club appearances.
He became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 regular-season goal contributions.
He returned to the Leagues Cup and reached 14 goals in the competition.
Then, at 39, he scored four times in one MLS match against CF Montréal.
As of September 7, the current Lionel Messi at Inter Miami scoring figure used by The News Ink stands at:
97 goals across all competitions.
His 2026 MLS total stands at:
18 goals.
And his club career remains active.
The Argentina chapter has ended.
Messi announced his international retirement on August 31.
His first club match afterward ended with another contribution, an assist for Casemiro against Atlanta United.
That may matter more than it initially appears.
For most of Messi’s senior career, club football and Argentina competed for his time and physical workload.
That is no longer true.
The final years of his playing career can now be dedicated entirely to Inter Miami.
His contract runs through 2028.
What happens next remains uncertain.
More goals are possible.
More MLS records are possible.
Another Golden Boot is possible.
More trophies are possible.
Reaching 100 Inter Miami goals is now extremely close.
But Lionel Messi at Inter Miami already has a substantial legacy even if nothing else were added.
He joined a club without a major first-team trophy.
He helped deliver the Leagues Cup almost immediately.
He helped Miami become the best regular-season team in MLS in 2024.
He helped the club win its first MLS Cup in 2025.
He became its all-time leading goalscorer.
He became its record creator.
He won two MVP awards.
A Golden Boot.
And MLS Cup MVP.
The Miami period will never replace Barcelona as the defining club chapter of Messi’s life.
Barcelona had 672 goals, 778 appearances and 35 trophies.
It covered his development and physical peak.
But that is not what the Miami chapter needs to do.
The importance of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami comes from something different.
It shows that after Barcelona, Paris, eight Ballon d’Or awards and a World Cup, Messi could enter a younger club in a different football environment and still create a championship era.
The winger became a playmaker.
The constant dribbler became more selective.
The scorer remained a scorer.
The creator became even more important.
Age changed how Messi played.
It did not remove his ability to decide matches.
That is the central story of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Not a retirement tour.
A late-career reinvention that became part of MLS history.
