NEWCASTLE UNITED came close to a memorable victory against FC Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg.

The hosts led late in the match at St James’ Park and looked set to secure a famous win. However, Barcelona earned a penalty in stoppage time.

Young star Lamine Yamal calmly converted the spot kick in the 95th minute. He sent goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw.

The late equaliser left Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe frustrated. He described the moment as the “last attack of the game” and the “last kick of the game.”

Barnes Thought He Had Won It

Earlier, Harvey Barnes looked to have secured a famous result for Newcastle. The winger scored with a first-time finish in the 85th minute after a fast attack.

The goal sparked huge celebrations among the home supporters. Barnes even received a standing ovation when he left the pitch shortly after scoring.

However, the late penalty changed the outcome and left the Newcastle bench stunned. Barnes later admitted the ending was difficult to accept but reminded fans that the tie is only halfway complete.

Strong Newcastle Performance

Newcastle delivered an impressive performance throughout the match. Defender Lewis Hall played a key role by containing Barcelona winger Yamal for most of the game.

Manager Hansi Flick also acknowledged Newcastle’s strong display. He admitted Barcelona struggled with possession and made several simple mistakes.

Despite limited opportunities, Barcelona managed to find the crucial equaliser late in the game.

Tie Still Open Ahead of Second Leg

The decisive moment came when Raphinha created space and passed to Dani Olmo. Defender Malick Thiaw then committed a foul inside the penalty area, forcing the referee to award a spot kick.

Although Newcastle felt disappointed after conceding so late, the result keeps the tie balanced. The second leg will take place in Spain next week.

Howe believes his team showed they can compete with Europe’s best clubs. Newcastle will now aim to build on that performance when they travel to face Barcelona in the return leg.
