The former footballer, 43, faces a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. Prosecutors say the incident could leave the victim with serious damage to his eyesight.

Barton appeared at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court where a judge denied his request for bail.

Incident at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club

Merseyside Police responded to reports of an assault at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club shortly after 9:00 PM on Sunday.

Authorities arrested Barton along with 50-year-old Gary O’Grady. Both men face a joint charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, a former non-league football manager.

Lynch, 51, remains in hospital. Prosecutors told the court that doctors are treating him for injuries that could lead to permanent damage to one of his eyes.

Court Proceedings and Bail Decision

During the hearing, the prosecution stated that Lynch’s injuries may be “irreversible.” However, both Barton and O’Grady strongly deny the allegation.

The court did not ask either defendant to enter a plea at this stage.

Judge James Hatton ordered Barton to remain in custody until the next court hearing. Meanwhile, O’Grady received conditional bail. He must not enter the golf club or contact the alleged victim or a named witness.

Both men will appear next at Liverpool Crown Court on 7 April for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

Barton’s Football Career

Barton enjoyed a long career in professional football. He played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Burnley FC and Rangers FC.

After retiring from professional football in 2017, Barton moved into football management.

The case continues as authorities investigate the alleged assault and prepare for the upcoming court proceedings.
