Iran has issued a warning of potential attacks on AI-linked data centers in the Middle East, escalating tensions with the United States amid ongoing conflict in the region.

In a video statement released last week, Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari said Tehran would respond to any U.S. strikes on its civilian infrastructure by targeting American energy and technology assets across the region.

The video included a visual reference to a major AI infrastructure project, highlighting the Stargate data center in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by a message suggesting that such sites are within Iran’s reach.

Rising Tensions Over Infrastructure Threats

The warning follows renewed threats from Donald Trump, who indicated that the U.S. could target Iranian civilian facilities — including power plants and water desalination sites — if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global trade corridor disrupted since the conflict intensified earlier this year.

Iran signaled that any such action would be met with retaliation against critical infrastructure linked to the U.S. and its allies in the Middle East.

AI Infrastructure in the Crosshairs

The Stargate initiative — a reported $500 billion joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle — aims to build large-scale AI data centers globally.

Originally announced in early 2025, the project has faced delays tied to funding challenges and rising costs but has been expanding its footprint internationally.

Recent developments suggest that such high-value tech infrastructure could become targets in geopolitical conflicts, marking a significant shift in modern warfare dynamics.

Reported Strikes on Tech Facilities

According to reports, several data centers in the region have already been affected. Iranian missile strikes reportedly hit facilities linked to Amazon Web Services in Bahrain and an Oracle-operated data center in Dubai.

Iran has also issued warnings directed at major global technology companies, including Nvidia and Apple, signaling a broader escalation involving the tech sector.

Growing Global Concerns

The situation underscores increasing risks to digital infrastructure as geopolitical tensions rise. Data centers — once considered neutral commercial assets — are now emerging as strategic targets due to their role in powering AI, cloud services, and global communications.

With both sides exchanging warnings, concerns are mounting over further disruption to global technology networks and supply chains.
