Netflix has announced the launch of a new standalone kids gaming app, Netflix Playground, aimed at expanding its presence in interactive entertainment for children.
The new app will be included as part of a standard Netflix subscription and will feature no ads or in-app purchases, making it a controlled and safe environment for younger users.
A Dedicated Gaming Space for Kids
Designed for children aged eight and under, Netflix Playground offers access to an “ever-growing” library of games based on popular kids’ shows and characters.
At launch, the app includes titles such as:
- Playtime With Peppa Pig
- Sesame Street interactive games
- StoryBots
- Let’s Color
- Bad Dinosaurs
These games focus on learning, creativity, and interactive play, including activities like memory matching, coloring, and coordination exercises.
Global Rollout Plan
Netflix Playground is currently available in:
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Philippines
- New Zealand
The company confirmed a global rollout scheduled for April 28, with availability on both iOS and Android devices.
Offline Access for Convenience
One of the app’s key features is offline functionality, allowing children to play games without an internet connection. Netflix says this makes it especially useful during travel, such as flights or road trips.
Expanding Netflix’s Gaming Strategy
According to John Derderian, Netflix’s Vice President of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV, the goal is to create a more immersive experience for children.
He said the company aims to build a platform where kids can not only watch their favorite shows but also interact with characters and stories through gameplay.
Netflix first entered the gaming space in 2021 but has since adjusted its strategy after early titles struggled to gain widespread popularity. The company has shut down several studios and is now focusing on more targeted experiences, including kids content and cloud gaming.
Recent efforts also include TV-based party games like Tetris and Pictionary, as Netflix continues experimenting with new formats in interactive entertainment.
