Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Brighton may have drawn criticism, but it strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race.

The MatchControversy and Gamesmanship

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler openly criticised Arsenal for time-wasting and negative play. “I think there was only one team who tried to play football today,” he said, praising his side’s efforts despite defeat.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded with a wry “what a surprise” and defended his players. “I love my players. We love our players and the way we compete,” he said.

The Match

The only goal came early, in the ninth minute, from Bukayo Saka, whose shot deflected off Carlos Baleba before slipping past Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen. Arsenal struggled to create further chances, registering minimal shots on target.

Brighton pressed for equaliser, but Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel Magalhães in the absence of William Saliba, held firm. Former England goalkeeper Rob Green commented: “Arsenal managed to grind out results tonight. Their defensive display was key.”

Controversy and Gamesmanship

Hurzeler and Brighton fans were frustrated throughout. Arsenal slowed play with deliberate delays, leading to multiple confrontations. Goalkeeper David Raya’s lengthy treatment after a save and Saka’s late theatrics further enraged the hosts. Hurzeler said, “Did you see in the Premier League a goalkeeper going down three times? No.”

Despite the criticism, Arsenal now lead the Premier League by seven points, with Manchester City still having a game in hand. Arteta showed no concern for popularity: “We look after our own garden,” he said, focusing on results rather than critics.

This victory keeps Arsenal firmly in control as they chase their first Premier League title since Arsene Wenger’s “Invincibles” in 2004, even if the manner of their wins divides opinion.
