When Jadon Sancho joined Manchester United in 2021, many fans believed the club had signed one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

Sancho himself described the transfer as “a dream come true.”

However, his time at Old Trafford did not go as planned. A mix of tactical challenges, personal struggles, and conflicts with the coaching staff turned the promising move into a frustrating period for both player and club.

Today, Sancho continues his career away from United after loan spells at several clubs.

Loan Rules Keep Him Away from Old Trafford

Sancho will not feature when Manchester United face Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Premier League rules prevent loan players from facing their parent clubs. As a result, Sancho cannot play against United during the match.

For Sancho, this situation reflects a wider pattern. Appearances at Old Trafford became rare during the later stages of his United career.

His last appearance there came on 26 August 2023, when he entered the match as a substitute during a comeback victory against Nottingham Forest.

Overall, Sancho made 30 league appearances at Old Trafford, but he completed a full match only 10 times.

A Brilliant Season Before the Transfer

Before joining United, Sancho enjoyed outstanding success at Borussia Dortmund.

During the 2020-21 season, he scored 16 goals and provided 20 assists in 38 matches. His performances helped Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal after defeating RB Leipzig 4-1 in the final.

Sancho also earned a place in the England national football team squad for the UEFA Euro 2020.

The tournament ended painfully when England lost to Italy national football team in a penalty shootout. Sancho missed his penalty and later faced racist abuse online, along with Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford.

Struggling to Fit into the Team

Another challenge quickly appeared after Sancho arrived in Manchester.

Club scouts expected him to play on the right wing, while Rashford occupied the left side. However, Sancho preferred playing on the left.

Because Rashford delivered strong performances in that position, Sancho often played on the right wing or sat on the bench.

This tactical mismatch prevented him from building consistent form.

Personal Difficulties and Time Away

In 2022, Sancho stepped away from the team for several months. The break allowed him to focus on both physical and mental recovery.

Reports suggested disappointment over missing the national team selection may have contributed to the situation.

During this time, manager Erik ten Hag arranged additional training sessions in the Netherlands to help Sancho regain confidence and fitness.

Although he eventually returned to the squad, he struggled to reproduce his best performances.

Disagreement with the Manager

Sancho’s situation worsened early in the 2023-24 season.

Ten Hag left him out of the squad for a match against Arsenal and later suggested the decision was based on training performance.

Sancho responded publicly on social media, saying he had been unfairly blamed for the situation.

The disagreement damaged the relationship between player and manager. After that moment, Sancho’s future at Manchester United became increasingly uncertain.

A Difficult Chapter

During his time with United, Sancho scored 12 goals and recorded six assists in 79 matches across all competitions.

Since leaving Dortmund, he has played for several clubs on loan but has struggled to match the impressive form that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting young players.

For Manchester United and Jadon Sancho, what began as a dream transfer eventually turned into a challenging chapter in both their stories.
