A recent Israeli airstrike in the northeastern Lebanese town of Younine has left a family devastated after eight members, including three children, were killed when their home was destroyed. The strike occurred during the evening as the extended family was reportedly preparing to break their fast during Ramadan.

When reporters visited the scene after the attack, the remains of the house were reduced to rubble. Personal belongings such as children’s toys, clothing, and food items from a small family shop were scattered across the debris. Among the ruins, a yellow flag associated with Hezbollah could be seen placed on top of the destroyed building.

According to statements from the Israeli military, the strike targeted what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure, claiming that operatives from the group were present at the location. However, neighbours and relatives of the victims said they were unaware of any such activity and insisted the family members were civilians.

Local residents described the moment the explosion occurred. A shepherd who had visited the family shop shortly before the strike said he had offered to bring them yoghurt from his herd. Shortly after returning home, he heard a powerful explosion and rushed back to the scene. He found the building completely collapsed, with debris and human remains scattered nearby. He assisted emergency responders by collecting remains until help arrived.

The emotional toll has been severe for people in the area. The shepherd explained that his daughter had been close friends with one of the children who died in the attack and had struggled to eat or drink since the incident due to shock and grief.

A Syrian refugee woman who lives nearby in a tent also shared her memories of the family. She said they ran a small shop and often allowed her to take groceries on credit, trusting that she would repay them later. She expressed disbelief at the strike, describing the victims as kind and religious people who kept to themselves.

The strike in Younine is part of a broader escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah that resumed roughly two weeks ago. Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of strikes across Lebanon, particularly in southern regions, the Bekaa Valley, and areas around Beirut that are known to have strong Hezbollah influence.

Lebanese health authorities report that more than 800 people have been killed since the fighting intensified. Among the victims were several healthcare workers who reportedly died after a medical facility was struck in a separate attack. Israeli officials have said the incident is under review.

The conflict has also forced hundreds of thousands of residents to flee their homes following evacuation orders issued by Israel. Israeli authorities maintain that Hezbollah operates military sites within civilian neighbourhoods, while many residents say the strikes are hitting populated areas where ordinary families live.

At the site of the destroyed house in Younine, everyday objects remained buried under the rubble—food supplies from the shop, household goods, and children’s belongings—offering a stark reminder of the lives that were lost in the attack.
