CHELESA and West Ham United F.C. have been fined £325,000 and £300,000 respectively following a “mass confrontation” during their Premier League clash in January.

The incident occurred in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge and involved multiple players from both sides.

What Sparked the Confrontation?

Tensions flared when Chelsea forward Joao Pedro reacted to a shove from West Ham winger Adama Traore on Blues defender Marc Cucurella.

Players from both teams quickly surrounded the scene, leading to chaotic scenes on the pitch. After a lengthy VAR review, referee Anthony Taylor issued a straight red card to West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo for grabbing Joao Pedro by the neck.

FA Charges and Fines

The The Football Association charged both clubs with failing to control their players.

It was alleged that Chelsea did not ensure their players avoided improper or provocative behaviour around the 95th minute. West Ham were charged with failing to prevent improper, provocative, or violent conduct.

Both clubs admitted the charges.

An independent regulatory commission described the incident as “serious” and noted that both sides had previously breached FA Rule E20.1, which prohibits behaviour that is improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting, or provocative.

Commission Findings

The commission concluded that both teams contributed to the altercation.

It stated that Marc Cucurella appeared to invite a reaction after conceding a corner, though this did not justify Traore’s response. Traore’s “disproportionate reaction” was described as the catalyst for the confrontation.

The commission also noted that three Chelsea players attempted to incite the crowd during and after the incident, behaviour it said had “no justification.”

While Todibo’s actions were deemed violent conduct, the commission found that other West Ham players acted in an improper and provocative manner rather than violently.

Match Context

The fiery scenes came after a dramatic turnaround. Chelsea had trailed 2-0 but rallied to win 3-2, with Enzo Fernandez scoring the decisive injury-time goal shortly before the confrontation unfolded.

The fines reflect the seriousness of the incident and serve as a reminder of the league’s strict stance on maintaining discipline during high-pressure matches.
