ZELENSKY has strongly criticized the United States for extending a waiver that allows limited sales of Russian oil despite ongoing sanctions.

The decision permits countries to continue purchasing Russian oil already loaded onto ships until mid-May. US officials say the move aims to stabilize global energy supplies during heightened geopolitical tensions.

Zelensky Warns of War Funding

Zelensky argued that allowing these oil transactions could indirectly support Russia’s military efforts. He stressed that revenue from energy sales plays a key role in funding ongoing attacks on Ukraine.

Since Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion in 2022, Western countries have imposed strict sanctions to limit Russia’s economic resources.

US Defends Decision

The US government stated that the waiver helps prevent further disruption in global energy markets. Officials pointed to rising instability caused by recent conflicts in the Middle East, which have affected oil supply routes.

The temporary measure aims to ensure that countries facing shortages can still access essential energy resources while diplomatic efforts continue.

Global Energy Market Under Pressure

Tensions in the region have significantly impacted oil transportation. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supply, has faced disruptions, reducing the flow of oil and liquefied natural gas.

These developments have increased concerns about rising energy prices and the potential for a global economic slowdown.

Concerns Over Russia’s Oil Network

Zelensky also highlighted Russia’s use of a “shadow fleet” of tankers to bypass sanctions. He claimed that continued oil sales could generate billions of dollars in revenue for Moscow.

According to Ukrainian officials, this income could support further military operations, including drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Ongoing Conflict Intensifies

Recent weeks have seen a surge in attacks, with large numbers of drones, bombs, and missiles targeting civilian areas. These developments have raised fears of further escalation in the conflict.
