WAYNE ROONEY has revealed that the most enjoyable and successful period of his international career came under former England manager Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson, who recently returned to management in a temporary role with Bristol City, led England between 2012 and 2016. During his tenure, he appointed Rooney as captain in 2014 following the international retirement of Steven Gerrard.

Speaking about their time together, Rooney highlighted the strong relationship and trust they built. He explained that this connection played a major role in his performances and enjoyment while representing the national team.

Rooney admitted he initially expected Hodgson to be calm and reserved. However, he quickly realized that the manager had a more intense side, especially during matches. This balance of composure and authority helped shape the team environment.

Hodgson’s managerial career spans decades, starting in 1976 with Swedish club Halmstad. Over the years, he has managed several top teams and national sides, including Switzerland, Inter Milan, and Liverpool.

Despite positive moments, their time together ended on a disappointing note at the 2016 European Championship. England suffered a shock defeat to Iceland in the round of 16, which led to Hodgson stepping down shortly after the match.

Hodgson later described the loss as one of the most difficult moments of his career. He believed the squad had the potential to achieve far more, especially with a group of talented young players emerging at the time.

Rooney also reflected on the emotional aftermath of that defeat. He recalled the mood in the dressing room and described it as the lowest point of his England career. He sensed that it marked the end of Hodgson’s tenure and began to consider his own future with the national team.

Even so, Rooney continues to look back on the Hodgson era as the highlight of his international journey, shaped by mutual respect, leadership, and belief.
