VICTOR WEMBANYAMA has made NBA history after being named the Defensive Player of the Year in a unanimous vote. The San Antonio Spurs star received all 100 first-place votes, becoming the first player ever to achieve this milestone.
The 7-foot-4 center has quickly become one of the most dominant defensive forces in basketball.
Historic Achievement at a Young Age
At just 22 years old, Wembanyama is now the youngest player to win the award. He also becomes only the second player to earn it within their first three NBA seasons, following Spurs legend David Robinson.
Selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has exceeded expectations since entering the league.
Defensive Dominance
Wembanyama led the NBA in blocks for the third consecutive season, averaging 3.1 per game. His defensive presence also included strong overall production, with averages of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and one steal per game.
He described the award as a proud moment and expressed excitement at becoming the first unanimous winner in the category’s history.
MVP-Level Impact
Wembanyama is also being considered for the Most Valuable Player race after helping the San Antonio Spurs secure the second-best regular season record at 62–20. The team also finished third in overall defensive ranking.
His ability to change games defensively has earned praise across the basketball world.
German NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki praised Wembanyama’s impact, saying he has never seen a player who alters games so dramatically just by being on the court.
Competition in the Voting
Chet Holmgren finished second in the voting, while Ausar Thompson came third.
Despite strong competition, Wembanyama’s dominance made him the clear choice among voters.
