A jury reached its decision after about three hours of deliberation. The court also convicted her of fraud for claiming insurance benefits after his death.

Motive Linked to Debt and Financial Gain

Prosecutors argued that Richins faced serious financial problems and had accumulated millions of dollars in debt. They said she took out life insurance policies on her husband and believed she would inherit an estate worth more than $4 million.

They also presented evidence that she was involved in an extramarital relationship and planned a future with another man.

Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth stated that she wanted to leave her husband but still gain access to his money.

Evidence Presented in Court

The prosecution called more than 40 witnesses, including a woman who admitted selling the drugs used in the crime.

Court documents revealed that Richins contacted a person with a history of drug charges to obtain prescription painkillers. She later asked for stronger substances and specifically requested fentanyl.

Investigators said she first attempted to poison her husband by tampering with his food, which led to a separate attempted murder conviction. She later increased the dosage in a final incident that caused his death.

Events Leading to Eric Richins’ Death

On 4 March 2022, Richins called emergency services and reported that she had found her husband unresponsive at their home near Park City, Utah.

She told authorities she had given him a mixed drink before going to sleep. When she returned, she said he was cold to the touch.

A medical examiner later confirmed that Eric Richins died from a fentanyl overdose, with levels far exceeding a lethal dose.

Suspicion Raised Before Death

According to court records, Eric Richins had previously expressed concern that he might have been poisoned. He reportedly shared his fears with a friend after falling ill following a Valentine’s Day dinner.

Book Publication Before Arrest

Two months before her arrest in March 2023, Richins published a children’s book titled Are You With Me?. She said the book aimed to help families cope with grief and loss.

She dedicated the book to her husband, describing him as a loving father.

Sentencing Ahead

Richins pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, the jury found her guilty, including the most serious charge of aggravated murder. She now faces a sentence ranging from 25 years to life in prison.
