A group of student filmmakers has created a powerful documentary to raise awareness about individuals living with both Down syndrome and autism.

The short film, Siblings, tells the story of two brothers and highlights the real-life experiences of their families. The creators drew inspiration from their own lives after discovering that both of their siblings had received a dual diagnosis.

The project brought the families closer together and helped deepen their understanding of the challenges and strengths associated with additional needs. The filmmakers aimed to show both the emotional and practical aspects of supporting loved ones.

One of the featured individuals, Alex, was diagnosed with autism at a young age. Although he is non-verbal, his family describes him as a caring and energetic person who continues to achieve important milestones in life.

Another subject, Ben, received his autism diagnosis later in life. His story reflects the diverse ways in which individuals experience and manage the condition.

The filmmakers carefully planned production around the brothers’ routines to ensure a comfortable and supportive environment during filming. This approach helped capture authentic moments while respecting their needs.

The documentary is currently being showcased at film festivals. The creators hope it will also serve as an educational resource in schools and communities.

Through this project, the team aims to promote understanding, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of support for families navigating dual diagnoses.
