SONIA BOMPASTOR has called for greater respect for women’s football after controversial refereeing decisions impacted Chelsea Women in their Women’s Champions League quarter-final loss to Arsenal Women.

Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat, but the match sparked debate due to two disallowed goals. The first decision proved especially contentious. Officials ruled that Veerle Buurman fouled Laia Codina before heading the ball into the net.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the incident but upheld the original call, stating there was no clear reason to overturn it.

Bompastor Voices Frustration

Bompastor expressed strong disappointment after the match. She believes the decision directly affected the outcome and questioned the quality of officiating at such a high level.

She said the women’s game deserves better standards, especially during major tournaments. According to her, players work hard to deliver top performances and deserve fair and accurate decisions.

Concerns Over VAR Decisions

The Chelsea manager criticized how VAR was used during the match. She argued that technology should help correct mistakes, not reinforce them.

Bompastor also pointed to previous incidents this season where decisions went against her team. She referenced a disallowed goal by Catarina Macario in a match against Barcelona, which she believes was incorrectly ruled out.

She stressed that while human errors can happen, the presence of VAR should reduce such mistakes.

Call for Better Officiating Standards

Bompastor insisted that improving officiating is essential for the growth of women’s football. She suggested appointing the most experienced referees for major matches, regardless of whether they come from the men’s or women’s game.

She emphasized that competence and consistency must remain the priority.

Match Officials Under Scrutiny

The match was officiated by Alina Pesu, who has experience in top competitions, including the Women’s Champions League and European Championship fixtures.

Despite her experience, the decisions in this match have sparked widespread debate about refereeing standards in elite women’s football.
