RORY MCLLORY has praised the return of Luke Donald as Europe’s captain for the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy believes Donald’s leadership gives the European team a major advantage. He also said the Ryder Cup is bigger than any individual player, even as questions remain about Jon Rahm’s eligibility for the 2027 event.

Donald will lead Europe for the third consecutive time. The 48-year-old hopes to become the first captain to win three Ryder Cups in a row.

The tournament will take place at Adare Manor in 2027.

Donald already has an impressive Ryder Cup record. He won the event four times as a player and served twice as a vice-captain. As captain, he guided Europe to victory in Rome in 2023. He also led the team to a dramatic win over the United States at Bethpage Black Course.

McIlroy Welcomes Donald’s Return

McIlroy shared his thoughts before the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The five-time major champion described Donald’s return as “wonderful” for the European team.

He believes the team benefits from continuity and strong leadership.

McIlroy said many players and staff members supported Donald’s return. He added that the entire European camp feels excited about the decision.

Decision Required Careful Thought

McIlroy revealed he spoke with Donald several times before the new year about continuing as captain.

After Europe’s victory in New York, Donald wanted time to reflect before making another commitment.

The Northern Irish star said he understood that decision. According to McIlroy, leading a Ryder Cup team demands a huge personal commitment.

Donald has already paused his own playing career for several years to focus on the role.

McIlroy said family support also plays a key part in such a big decision. Donald had to consider the views of his wife Diane and their children before accepting the role again.

McIlroy Excited for Home Ryder Cup

The 2027 Ryder Cup will be special for McIlroy. It will mark the first time he plays the tournament on the island of Ireland.

He hopes to play a major role in helping Europe win the trophy again.

McIlroy also believes Donald has the chance to create history.

If Europe wins at Adare Manor, Donald could become the greatest Ryder Cup captain in the competition’s history.

McIlroy said he feels excited about that possibility.

He also wants to contribute to the team’s success and help Donald achieve that milestone.
