Quentin Griffiths, co-founder of online fashion retailer Asos, has died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in Thailand, police have confirmed.

Thai authorities said the British national was found dead on 9 February in the eastern coastal city of Pattaya. Investigators reported that Griffiths had been staying as a long-term resident in a 17th-floor suite at a luxury hotel.

Police told the BBC that he was alone at the time of the incident. His room was locked from the inside, and there were no signs of forced entry. An autopsy did not reveal evidence of foul play.

Griffiths co-founded ASOS in 2000 alongside Nick Robertson, Andrew Regan and Deborah Thorpe. He stepped away from the company five years later but remained a significant shareholder.

In a statement, an Asos spokesperson said the company was “saddened to hear about the passing of Quentin, one of our original co-founders,” adding that he played an important role in the business’s early development.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed that officials are supporting the family of a British national who died in Thailand and are in contact with local authorities.

Police in Pattaya also indicated that Griffiths had been involved in two ongoing court cases, which may have caused him stress. He had reportedly separated from his second wife, a Thai national, and was said to be engaged in a legal dispute concerning a joint business venture.

Founded in London, Asos — originally an acronym for “As Seen On Screen” — began by selling fashion inspired by outfits worn by film and television stars. The company later expanded into a global online marketplace offering hundreds of brands alongside its own labels.

At its peak, Asos was valued at more than £6 billion. Major shareholders include Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen, owner of Bestseller, and Mike Ashley, founder of Frasers Group.

Authorities have not announced any further investigation beyond the findings already released.
