Matt Baker Reflects on Strictly Come Dancing Experience

Television presenter Matt Baker has opened up about his time on Strictly Come Dancing, revealing that his energetic and acrobatic performances occasionally frustrated the show’s judging panel during his run in the competition.

Len Goodman Was “Annoyed” by Acrobatic Routines

Baker said his backflips and gymnastics-inspired moves often irritated the late head judge Len Goodman, who preferred traditional ballroom style over theatrical choreography. Despite the criticism, Baker said he enjoyed pushing creative boundaries with his dance routines.

Strong Strictly Run With Aliona Vilani

Competing alongside professional dancer Aliona Vilani, Baker reached the final of Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, finishing as runner-up. He described the experience as physically demanding but highly rewarding, comparing it to his earlier background in gymnastics.

Early Life and Athletic Background Influenced Performances

Baker credited his school-level gymnastics training for helping him adapt to the show’s intense choreography. However, he was forced to give up the sport at age 14 after being diagnosed with anaemia, a setback that redirected his early ambitions.

From Drama Student to Television Success

Before becoming a household name, Baker studied acting at Queen Margaret University School of Drama. During this time, he performed in stage productions and developed the performance skills that later helped him succeed in television and live entertainment formats.

Career Beyond Strictly and Countryfile

Beyond his role on Countryfile, Baker has appeared in various television projects, including coverage of major events such as the 2012 London Olympics. His career has also included presenting roles across entertainment and factual programming.

Personal Life and Farming Connection

Baker’s strong connection to rural life stems from his upbringing on a farm in County Durham. He has also documented family life and farm renovations in television projects, highlighting his close bond with his parents and his long-standing interest in countryside living.
