A major fire broke out near Glasgow Central Station on Sunday, forcing evacuations and disrupting train services across the city.
The blaze started in a vape shop on Union Street during the afternoon. Flames quickly spread through a nearby B-listed Victorian building, which later partially collapsed as the fire intensified.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far.
Train Services Suspended
Rail services at Glasgow Central, Scotland’s busiest railway station, have been cancelled until at least the end of Monday.
National Rail said there is currently no confirmed time for the station to reopen.
Meanwhile, Network Rail stated after a late-night meeting that initial checks had not identified major structural damage to the station. Officials will carry out a full inspection in daylight.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze Overnight
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent more than 60 firefighters and 15 vehicles to tackle the fire.
Crews first arrived at the scene around 15:45 local time after receiving emergency calls. The situation worsened during the evening as flames spread through the building.
Firefighters were still working to control the blaze more than 13 hours later, urging the public to stay away from the area.
Eyewitnesses Describe “Catastrophic” Scene
Early reports showed heavy smoke rising from a building beside an entrance to the station.
As the fire grew, large flames became visible. Witnesses shared images on social media and described the scene as “catastrophic.”
Journalists at the site reported that the dome at the corner of the building collapsed during the intense fire. Parts of the structure, including several floors, were still standing but badly damaged.
Businesses Destroyed by Fire
Several businesses inside the building suffered severe damage.
The owners of the Sexy Coffee shop confirmed that their café had been destroyed in the blaze. They shared a message online expressing heartbreak and thanking customers for years of support.
The owner of Willow Hair Salon also said the fire had burned the business to the ground.
Hotel Guests Evacuated
Guests staying at the nearby voco Grand Central Glasgow hotel were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities moved them to other hotels in the city.
