SHABANA MAHMOOD has urged Labour MPs to back her planned overhaul of the UK asylum system. She warned that failure to act could open the door to harsher, US-style immigration crackdowns.

The home secretary is preparing to introduce new legislation aimed at tightening asylum rules and reducing illegal migration. She argues that the current system is too generous and attracts false claims while funding human trafficking networks. According to Mahmood, rising migration levels are placing pressure on public services and increasing division within communities.

She cautioned that ignoring the issue could fuel support for right-wing movements and lead to enforcement tactics similar to those used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the United States.

The proposed reforms aim to counter the growing appeal of Reform UK. However, reports suggest that up to 40 Labour MPs may oppose the measures, describing them as too harsh.

Mahmood recently visited Denmark, whose strict asylum policies she has publicly admired. She believes reform is necessary to restore public confidence in the system and prevent further political polarization.

The debate is expected to intensify as the legislation moves forward
