Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will miss the club’s upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea after receiving an additional one-match suspension.
The 33-year-old centre-back was sent off during United’s 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth last month. He conceded a penalty in the 78th minute after bringing down Evanilson inside the box.
Following the match, The Football Association charged Maguire with improper conduct. The charge related to comments he made toward fourth official Matt Donohue while leaving the pitch.
The FA handed Maguire a one-match ban and fined him £30,000, stating that he used abusive or insulting language. According to the official report, Donohue claimed Maguire shouted: “You’re a joke. You’re all a joke.”
Maguire denied directing the comment at the officials, saying he expressed frustration generally rather than targeting anyone specifically. However, he admitted his behaviour was inappropriate and issued an apology.
The disciplinary panel considered a two-match ban but reduced the punishment to one match after taking mitigating factors into account, including Maguire accepting the charge.
Manchester United will face further defensive challenges against Chelsea. Lisandro Martínez is also suspended after receiving a red card for violent conduct in the recent defeat to Leeds United. Additionally, Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the match due to a long-term back injury.
Manager Michael Carrick now faces a defensive crisis, with young players Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven likely to step in as central defenders.
Alternative options include experienced players such as Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui, who have previously played in defensive roles.
Despite the challenges, Manchester United remain third in the Premier League standings. However, a win for Chelsea could narrow the gap and put United’s hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League spot under pressure.
