South Korean authorities are investigating K-pop executive Bang Si-hyuk over allegations of fraudulent trading linked to his company’s public listing.

Police have asked prosecutors to seek an arrest warrant, claiming that Bang misled investors in 2019. Investigators say he suggested that his company, Hybe, had no immediate plans to go public while secretly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO).

Hybe eventually launched on the KOSPI in October 2020. Authorities allege that Bang earned around 200 billion won (approximately $136 million) through these actions. He strongly denies all accusations.

The investigation has been ongoing for some time. Officials have conducted raids at Hybe’s headquarters, frozen some of Bang’s assets, and even called for him to step down as chairman. He has also faced a travel ban since August while authorities continue their inquiry.

Despite the legal pressure, Bang remains a central figure in the global success of BTS. The group recently launched a major comeback world tour after a break of nearly four years. Industry experts expect the tour to generate over $1 billion in revenue, covering 34 cities worldwide.

Following the tour announcement earlier this year, Hybe’s shares surged to a four-year high, boosting the company’s market value by more than 1 trillion won.

Bang has played a key role in transforming BTS into a global phenomenon. In a recent interview, he described the group as a worldwide attraction embraced by audiences across different cultures.

Under South Korean law, individuals found guilty of earning over 5 billion won through illegal activities can face severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment or even life sentences.

Background on Bang Si-hyuk

Bang developed an interest in music at an early age. During his school years, he performed in a band and began writing his own songs. His passion continued into university, where he built a foundation for his career in music production.

In 1997, he co-founded JYP Entertainment with Park Jin-young. The company later became one of South Korea’s leading entertainment agencies.

One of their early successes was the group g.o.d, which helped establish Bang’s reputation as a successful producer. This success earned him the nickname “Hitman Bang” within the industry.
