John Higgins Stuns Ronnie O’Sullivan in Crucible Classic to Reach Quarter Finals

John Higgins stunning 13-12 win over Ronnie O’Sullivan became one of the biggest talking points of the World Snooker Championship as the four-time world champion completed a remarkable comeback at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. After trailing 9-4 during the match, Higgins fought back with experience, patience, and brilliant shot-making to defeat O’Sullivan in a dramatic final-frame decider and book his place in the quarter finals.

The match brought together two legends of the sport, both aged 50 and both part of snooker’s famous Class of ’92. Fans expected a high-quality battle, but what unfolded was even greater, with many calling it one of the finest matches seen at the Crucible in recent years.

John Higgins Stunning 13-12 Win Over Ronnie O’Sullivan Begins with Early Pressure

Ronnie O’Sullivan entered the contest aiming to win a record-breaking eighth world title in the modern era. The seven-time champion looked in control for much of the match and built strong leads of 8-3 and later 9-4 during Sunday’s session.

His scoring was sharp, his confidence looked strong, and many believed the match was heading toward a comfortable O’Sullivan victory.

However, John Higgins refused to let the match slip away.

The Scottish star won the final three frames on Sunday to stay alive and carried that momentum into Monday by taking the opening three frames of the next session. Suddenly, the entire atmosphere changed as O’Sullivan found himself under real pressure.

It was only the fifth time in his Crucible career that O’Sullivan had lost six consecutive frames, showing just how special Higgins’ recovery truly was.

Crucible Crowd Witnesses a Classic Championship Battle

As the frames passed, the match turned into a true snooker classic. Both players produced excellent safety play, clinical breaks, and moments of real brilliance under pressure.

O’Sullivan responded strongly by winning frames 20 and 21, moving back ahead at 11-10 and reminding everyone why he remains one of the sport’s greatest competitors.

Still, Higgins remained calm.

He responded by winning the next two frames to move ahead 12-11, placing himself just one frame away from a famous victory. But O’Sullivan answered with a superb break of 81, forcing a deciding frame and creating a perfect dramatic ending.

The Crucible crowd was fully engaged, with every shot carrying tension and importance.

Final Frame Decider Seals John Higgins Stunning 13-12 Win Over Ronnie O’Sullivan

The deciding frame delivered exactly the drama fans hoped for.

Higgins started first and built a small lead of 16-0, but a missed red into the middle pocket gave O’Sullivan a chance to punish him. Surprisingly, the Englishman could only score eight points before missing a red of his own.

That miss opened the door.

Higgins returned to the table and showed all his championship experience by producing a calm and controlled break of 49. It was enough to secure the frame, complete the comeback, and seal John Higgins stunning 13-12 win over Ronnie O’Sullivan.

As the final ball dropped, both players received a standing ovation from the Sheffield crowd. It was a fitting ending to a match that may be remembered for years.

Class of ’92 Legacy Shines Again

John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan are two key members of snooker’s legendary Class of ’92, alongside Mark Williams. Together, the three players have won 14 world titles and helped shape modern snooker for more than three decades.

Higgins, world champion in 1998, 2007, 2009, and 2011, once again showed why he remains one of the toughest competitors in the sport. His ability to recover from a five-frame deficit against a player like O’Sullivan speaks volumes about his mentality and quality.

For O’Sullivan, the defeat ends his hopes of winning an eighth world title this year, but his level throughout the match showed he remains one of the game’s greatest threats.

What Comes Next After John Higgins Stunning 13-12 Win Over Ronnie O’Sullivan

With this major victory, Higgins advances to the World Championship quarter finals where he will face either 2010 world champion Neil Robertson or world number 13 Chris Wakelin.

Robertson currently leads that match 10-6, making him the likely opponent.

Whoever comes next, Higgins will enter with huge confidence after surviving one of the toughest matches of the tournament.

John Higgins stunning 13-12 win over Ronnie O’Sullivan was not just a result. It was a reminder of how powerful experience, belief, and mental strength can be on snooker’s biggest stage.
