JD.com Expands into the UK with Joybuy Platform

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has launched its new shopping platform, Joybuy, in the United Kingdom. The move places the retailer in direct competition with global online marketplace Amazon.

Joybuy will operate from distribution centres located in Milton Keynes and Luton. The platform will offer a wide range of products, including technology, home appliances, beauty items, household goods, and groceries.

Fast Delivery for UK Customers

JD.com confirmed that Joybuy will provide next-day delivery to around 17 million households across the UK at launch.

Company leaders said they aim to build a long-term presence in the British market. They believe the platform’s wide product selection, competitive pricing, and convenient delivery options will attract new customers.

Previous UK Acquisition Talks

The UK launch follows JD.com’s earlier attempts to expand through acquisitions. In 2024, the company withdrew from negotiations to purchase Currys. It also held discussions about acquiring Argos last year but did not reach an agreement.

Despite those setbacks, JD.com remains determined to grow its presence in the European retail market.

Market Competition Intensifies

The expansion comes during changes in the UK’s logistics landscape. Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to close its first UK distribution centre in Brogborough, Bedfordshire, UK.

Matthew Nobbs, managing director of Joybuy UK, expressed confidence about the company’s prospects. He said the business expects strong growth as it introduces its services to British shoppers.

Wider European Expansion

JD.com is also launching Joybuy in several other European markets at the same time. These include Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

The company recently strengthened its position in Europe through a €2.2 billion deal to acquire the electronics retail group Ceconomy.

With its UK debut and wider European rollout, JD.com aims to expand its global footprint and compete more aggressively in the international e-commerce market.
