The moment stood in contrast to their silence before their opening match earlier in the tournament.

During their first game against South Korea women’s national football team, the Iranian players stood quietly and did not sing the anthem.

Silence in First Match Came Amid Rising Tensions

The earlier silence came during a period of escalating tensions in Iran. Air strikes from the United States and Israel had targeted sites inside the country.

The Iranian squad had arrived in Australia before the strikes began.

However, the players’ decision to sing the anthem before the match against Australia raised questions.

No official explanation has been provided for the change in approach.

Claims of Pressure on Players

Journalist Alireza Mohebbi, who reports for Iran International TV, suggested the players may have faced pressure.

Speaking to ABC News, he said there was “no doubt” that officials had instructed the players to sing the anthem and perform a military salute.

He claimed members of the Iranian regime and security personnel travelling with the team influenced the decision.

Emotional Comments From Iranian Player

Iranian striker Sara Didar spoke emotionally about the situation facing the players.

She said it had been difficult to stay focused on football while worrying about family members back home.

Meanwhile, head coach Marziyeh Jafari said the team was saddened by the situation but remained focused on the competition.

She stated that nobody wants war and emphasized that the team had come to Australia to play football.

Tough Situation in the Tournament

Iran suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Australia in the match.

The team must now beat the Philippines women’s national football team in their next game to keep hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Similar Situation at 2022 World Cup

The situation mirrors what happened with the Iran men’s national football team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Players stayed silent during the national anthem before their opening match against England national football team. They later sang the anthem before facing Wales national football team.

That tournament also took place during protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody.

Protests Outside the Stadium

Before the match in Gold Coast, dozens of Iranian-Australians gathered outside the stadium.

They waved flags of Israel, Australia, and the pre-revolution Iranian flag to show support for protesters.
