Security concerns rise after explosives discovery near key gas pipeline.

HUNGARY has raised serious security concerns after authorities discovered explosives near a major gas pipeline supplying Russian energy to the country. The incident comes just days before a crucial national election.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban quickly called an emergency meeting of the National Defence Council. Officials reported that the explosives were found across the border in Serbia, near a key section of the TurkStream pipeline.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed the discovery. Military units located two bags filled with explosives and detonators near a village close to the pipeline route. Authorities described the materials as highly dangerous.

The TurkStream pipeline plays a critical role in Hungary’s energy supply. The country depends on it for billions of cubic metres of gas each year, making any threat to the infrastructure a major concern.

The timing of the discovery has intensified political tensions. Orban’s ruling party is currently trailing in opinion polls ahead of the upcoming vote. This has led to strong reactions from opposition figures.

Opposition leader Peter Magyar dismissed the situation as exaggerated. He accused the government of creating fear to influence voters and suggested outside influence behind the narrative.

Security analysts have also raised concerns about the possibility of a staged incident. Some experts warned that such an event could be used to gain political advantage or justify emergency measures.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s relationship with Russia remains a key issue. Orban has maintained close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has resisted pressure from the European Union to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

The government has argued that affordable fuel prices depend on continued access to Russian oil and gas. These supplies arrive through pipelines that pass through neighboring countries, including Ukraine.

Orban has also accused European and Ukrainian leaders of attempting to disrupt Hungary’s energy supply. He claims such actions are part of a broader effort to influence the country’s political direction.

As investigations continue, the situation remains uncertain. The alleged plot has added another layer of tension to an already heated election environment.
