Hungary has entered a new political era after Péter Magyar secured a decisive election victory, ending the long-standing leadership of Viktor Orbán. Magyar and his Tisza party have already begun preparing for a swift transition of power.

The election results show a clear mandate. Magyar’s party won 52% of the vote, gaining 140 seats in the 199-member National Assembly. In contrast, Orbán’s Fidesz party saw a sharp decline, dropping from 135 seats to just 53.

Fast-Tracked Transition of Power

Following the victory, Magyar quickly secured support from Tamás Sulyok to accelerate the formation of the new parliament. Lawmakers are expected to convene in early May, where they will officially elect the new government.

Magyar has also taken a firm stance on media reform. He announced plans to temporarily suspend certain public broadcasting programs until independent editorial leadership is established. This move aims to address concerns about media bias during the previous administration.

Major Reforms on the Agenda

With a strong parliamentary majority, Magyar plans to introduce significant political changes. One key proposal includes limiting prime ministers to two terms. If approved, this rule would prevent Orbán—who has already served five terms—from returning to power in the future.

Such reforms signal a shift toward restructuring Hungary’s political system and reinforcing democratic checks.

Orbán Responds to Defeat

After days of silence, Viktor Orbán publicly acknowledged the election results. He described the outcome as the end of an era and accepted responsibility for the loss.

Orbán admitted feeling a sense of disappointment but did not provide a detailed explanation of his party’s defeat. He only pointed to delays in the Paks 2 nuclear power project as one of the government’s shortcomings.

A Defining Moment for Hungary

Magyar’s rapid actions reflect a clear intention to implement change without delay. His leadership marks a turning point in Hungary’s political landscape after 16 years of continuity under Orbán.

As the new government prepares to take office, attention now shifts to how quickly these promised reforms will materialize—and how they will shape the country’s future.
