A woman and child jumped from a rooftop to flee a horrific mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana. Authorities say a father shot and killed eight children there, including seven of his own.
Police received an emergency call at 5:55 AM CDT on Sunday. The caller said they hid “on top of the house” while the gunman stayed inside. Both survivors now remain in stable condition.
The suspect died after trading gunfire with officers. Police cannot yet confirm if he took his own life or if officers shot him.
Two adult women suffered gunshot wounds too. One is the children’s mother. Both recover in the hospital. A ninth child also jumped from the roof and reached the hospital.
The eight slain children included three boys and five girls. Ages ranged from 3 to 11. Mothers named them: Jayla Elkins (3), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), and Braylon Snow (5).
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith described the timeline. The rooftop caller soon reported they reached the backyard safely. Then the gunman attacked a second home.
At the second house, another caller said her boyfriend shot her and took three children. Police soon heard of a carjacking. They believed the children rode in that stolen vehicle.
Officers found the suspect at 6:29 AM. Gunfire erupted. He died at the scene.
