Civilians Killed in Attack at Picnic Site in Western Afghanistan

Multiple people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on civilians gathered at a picnic spot in Herat in western Afghanistan. The attack has raised fresh concerns about civilian safety in public recreational areas, as local officials and medical sources continue to provide differing accounts of the scale of casualties.

Attack Occurs in Enjil District Recreation Area

The shooting took place in the Enjil district near the village of Deh Mehri, a location known for attracting families and visitors, particularly on Fridays. According to officials, armed men traveling on motorcycles opened fire on civilians who had gathered in the area for leisure, turning what is usually a crowded and peaceful outing into a scene of panic and violence.

Conflicting Death Toll Reports Emerge

Authorities have reported varying figures regarding the number of casualties, with Taliban officials stating that between four and seven people were killed. However, a local doctor speaking from a hospital in Herat claimed the death toll could be significantly higher, estimating up to 12 fatalities along with several injured individuals, some of whom remain in critical condition.

Victims Reportedly From Hazara Community

Medical sources indicated that many of the victims were members of the Hazara Shia Muslim community, a minority group in Afghanistan that has historically faced targeted attacks and discrimination. The community has been repeatedly affected by sectarian violence in previous years, making this latest incident particularly alarming for local residents and rights observers.

No Group Claims Responsibility

So far, no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack, while authorities continue to investigate the incident. Officials confirmed that security forces have arrested at least one suspect, though details about the motive or possible affiliations of the attackers remain unclear at this stage.

Officials Describe Targeted Shooting

Taliban representatives described the incident as an attack carried out by “unidentified armed men” who opened fire on people gathered near a local shrine in Deh Mehri village. The area is known for regular visits by locals who come to pray and spend time with family, making the violence especially shocking for the surrounding community.

Rising Concerns Over Civilian Safety

The attack adds to ongoing concerns about security conditions in Afghanistan, where sporadic violence continues to affect civilians despite tighter control by authorities. Incidents like this highlight the persistent risks faced by communities in rural and semi-urban areas, particularly those linked to minority groups and public gathering spots.
