Fuel Supply Restored After Blockade at Irish Refinery

Fuel trucks have regained access to the Whitegate Refinery in the Republic of Ireland after a days-long blockade disrupted fuel distribution across the country. The refinery, a key part of Ireland’s fuel infrastructure, had been inaccessible due to ongoing protest activity at its entrance.

Police Operation Clears Protesters From Site

Irish police, known as Garda Síochána, carried out an operation on Saturday to remove large tractors blocking the refinery gates. The operation was supported by the Irish Defence Forces, and officers used pepper spray as they pushed back protesters to restore access for fuel tankers.

Fuel Tankers Resume Operations at Whitegate

Following the clearance, fuel tankers were once again able to enter and exit the refinery, with footage showing escorted vehicles leaving the site under police supervision. The restoration of access is expected to ease immediate pressure on fuel supplies, which have been disrupted nationwide during the protests.

Widespread Fuel Shortages Across Ireland

The blockade has contributed to severe fuel shortages across the country, with hundreds of petrol stations reportedly running dry as slow-moving convoys of tractors and other vehicles continued to block key fuel depots. Additional blockades remain in place in counties Limerick and Galway, prolonging the disruption.

Government Negotiations and Support Measures

Irish government ministers have been in talks with representatives from farming and haulage sectors in an effort to finalise a funding package. The proposed support includes a temporary fuel assistance scheme aimed at businesses most affected by rising fuel costs and supply disruptions.

Authorities Warn of Legal Consequences

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed that multiple arrests were made during the operation and warned that further enforcement action would follow if blockades continue. He stated that such actions are illegal and emphasized that critical infrastructure must not be obstructed.

Security Concerns Over Threats to Drivers

Authorities also reported incidents of intimidation against fuel tanker drivers during the protests. Officials warned that serious offences, including threats of violence, carry significant prison sentences, and urged protesters to cease blockades immediately to avoid further legal consequences.
