A major fire near Glasgow Central Station has forced the closure of Scotland’s busiest railway station for at least two days. Authorities confirmed the shutdown after flames engulfed a nearby building on Union Street.

Train Services DisruptedBusinesses Damaged by the FireEmergency Response

The fire started at a vape shop inside a four-storey building close to the station. Emergency crews responded quickly as the blaze spread through the structure. Several parts of the building later collapsed, causing further safety concerns.

Rail operator Network Rail confirmed that all train services to and from the station have been suspended. Officials said the station will remain closed until engineers can safely inspect the area.

Train Services Disrupted

The disruption has affected thousands of passengers. According to ScotRail, 15 out of its 36 routes experienced delays or cancellations. No trains are currently stopping at Glasgow Central.

Rail authorities advised passengers to follow alternative travel arrangements provided by train operators. Officials will announce a reopening timeline only after safety checks are complete.

Businesses Damaged by the Fire

The fire has caused severe damage to nearby businesses. Several owners reported that their premises were destroyed by the blaze.

Local officials described the destruction as extensive. One representative said the damage “looks like something out of the Blitz.”

Emergency Response

Firefighters worked through the night to control the flames. Authorities confirmed that the fire is now under control, but emergency teams remain at the scene to secure the area.

John Swinney expressed concern about the incident. He thanked emergency services for their rapid response and continued efforts to protect the public.

Transport officials said updates will follow as soon as safety inspections begin and the station becomes accessible.
