FIFA has indicated that it will not shift Iran’s matches from the United States to Mexico during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Officials from Iran’s football federation recently explored the possibility of relocating their fixtures. They raised concerns about player safety due to rising tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. However, FIFA has chosen to proceed with the existing match schedule.

The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, with matches hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran is set to play its group-stage games in the United States, including matches against New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team, and Egypt national football team.

Iran’s football leadership expressed hesitation about traveling to the United States. Mehdi Taj stated that safety guarantees remain unclear and confirmed that discussions with FIFA had taken place regarding a possible switch to Mexico.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump commented that Iran could participate in the tournament but suggested that security concerns might make their presence challenging.

In response, FIFA emphasized that it remains in regular contact with all participating nations. The organization expects every team, including Iran, to compete according to the official schedule announced earlier.

Despite ongoing tensions, Iran has not withdrawn from the tournament. The team has qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup and plans to compete unless conditions change significantly.

A statement shared on the team’s official communication channels stressed that FIFA, not any host nation, controls the tournament. It also suggested that host countries must ensure a safe environment for all teams.

⚽ Previous Examples of Match Relocation

Football and other sports have adjusted match locations in the past due to political and security issues.

For example, Belarus national football team has played home matches in neutral venues like Hungary due to geopolitical tensions. Similarly, cricket matches between India national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team often take place in neutral countries during global tournaments.

These examples show that while relocation is possible, governing bodies only make such decisions under exceptional circumstances.

For now, FIFA continues to move forward with its original plan, keeping Iran’s matches in the United States.
