Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sorrow and extended her support to the victims and their families. She described the incident as deeply painful and assured that her government is closely monitoring the situation.

Chaos at a Major Tourist Destination

The shooting occurred at the ancient pyramid complex, a globally recognized landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and confusion. A British couple visiting the site said people began running in all directions as gunfire echoed through the area.

They reported that the sound of shots became louder, causing fear among tourists. Many people shouted warnings, which intensified the panic. The couple quickly moved toward the exit with their group.

Lack of Coordinated Response

Visitors highlighted a lack of clear evacuation procedures. While some officials were present, they did not provide clear instructions to guide people to safety. Tourists continued entering the site even as others were trying to escape.

Authorities later recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live ammunition from the scene. However, officials have not yet revealed the attacker’s identity or motive.

International Reactions and Support

Anita Anand confirmed that one Canadian citizen died and another was injured in the attack. She stated that consular officials are actively assisting those affected.

Mexican officials also reported that individuals from Colombia and Russia were among the injured. The government has begun a full investigation into the incident.

President Sheinbaum confirmed that she is in contact with the Canadian embassy and has instructed her security team to provide full support to victims and their families.

Concerns Ahead of Global Event

The incident comes just weeks before matches of the FIFA World Cup are scheduled to take place in Mexico City. This has raised concerns about safety and security at major tourist locations.

As investigations continue, authorities aim to determine what led to this tragic event and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
