Tottenham Hotspur are close to naming Roberto De Zerbi as their next head coach. If confirmed, the former Brighton manager would face seven games to prevent Spurs from dropping to the Championship.

Why De Zerbi Could SucceedPotential Challenges

At 17th in the Premier League and winless in 2026, Tottenham are just one point above the relegation zone. Failure to survive would mark one of the club’s most dramatic downturns in history.

De Zerbi, 46, would succeed Igor Tudor, who lasted only 44 days in the role. After guiding Brighton to European qualification during two Premier League seasons (2022–2024), De Zerbi led Marseille to second place in Ligue 1 before departing in February.

His first match at Tottenham is expected to be an away trip to Sunderland on 12 April, followed by a home game against his former club Brighton. Remaining fixtures include home games against Leeds and Everton and trips to Wolves, Aston Villa, and Chelsea.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson described De Zerbi as “a very outspoken manager, similar in style to Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte.”

Why De Zerbi Could Succeed

De Zerbi brings a strong football philosophy rooted in positional play, pressing triggers, and ball control—a style influenced by Pep Guardiola but uniquely his own.

He thrives under pressure and has never managed a club without expectations. At a chaotic club like Tottenham, his clear and decisive approach could be exactly what the team needs.

The timing of his likely appointment also gives him an advantage: Spurs do not play again until 12 April, giving De Zerbi time to assess the squad during the international break.

Potential Challenges

The main risk is not De Zerbi himself but whether Tottenham’s leadership and staff can fully align with his vision. In previous roles, his projects unraveled when directors or owners interfered, as seen at Marseille.

For De Zerbi to succeed in London, the club must provide stable, communicative support and allow him to implement his strategies without obstruction—a tall order in a side battling relegation.

The next seven games will determine whether De Zerbi becomes a hero at Tottenham or is remembered for one of the club’s most turbulent seasons.
