BEN STOKES has said he will adjust how he works with head coach Brendon McCullum following England’s heavy Ashes defeat in Australia, while rejecting claims of a breakdown in their relationship.

Stokes acknowledged that he and McCullum sometimes approach the game differently, but insisted their partnership remains strong and focused on winning.

During the Ashes series, England suffered a 4-1 defeat against Australia cricket team. Reports suggested differences in approach emerged between captain and coach over batting strategy and match intensity.

Stokes admitted that England may have become predictable and that opponents had adapted to their style of play. However, he stressed that any suggestion of a major rift was exaggerated.

He explained that while he and McCullum agree on most decisions, occasional differences of opinion are normal in high-performance sport. He said they discuss disagreements openly and usually reach a shared conclusion.

Stokes and McCullum began working together in 2022 and initially enjoyed strong success, winning 10 of their first 11 Test matches. Their aggressive style of play earned praise and transformed England’s red-ball cricket approach.

However, recent results have been less consistent. Since that early success, England have recorded more defeats than wins, including the Ashes loss and a drawn series against India.

Despite this, Stokes said their long-standing partnership remains valuable and built on mutual respect. He emphasised that both he and McCullum are fully committed to improving the team.

He also dismissed speculation that England’s leadership group is divided, stating that collaboration and open communication remain central to their approach.

McCullum is expected to return to the UK ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, where further discussions about team direction are likely.

As part of a wider review following the Ashes, the England and Wales Cricket Board has encouraged more frequent media engagement from McCullum to provide greater clarity on team strategy.

Both Stokes and McCullum remain under contract until 2027 and continue to play key roles in England’s long-term plans.

Stokes, currently recovering from injury, is aiming to return to competitive cricket soon as he works back to full fitness ahead of the domestic season.
