Artificial intelligence is transforming the way scientists discover medicines. Researchers now use AI to design drugs for diseases that once seemed impossible to treat.

The technology is already helping scientists fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria and explore treatments for complex illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease.

A Growing Global Health Threat

For decades, antibiotics helped humanity control deadly infections. However, bacteria have gradually developed resistance to many of these drugs.

Today, drug-resistant infections cause more than one million deaths every year worldwide. Experts warn that the number could exceed eight million annually by 2050 if new treatments are not developed.

Despite the urgency, progress has been slow. Between 2017 and 2022, regulators approved only 12 new antibiotics. Most of these drugs were similar to existing ones, meaning bacteria may quickly develop resistance to them.

Pharmaceutical companies often avoid antibiotic research because it is expensive and produces lower profits compared with other medicines.

AI Speeds Up Drug Discovery

Researchers now hope artificial intelligence can change that situation.

James Collins, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says AI can analyze huge chemical databases much faster than traditional methods.

Using advanced algorithms, his research team scans millions of chemical compounds to find molecules that could kill dangerous bacteria.

Collins says the process can take hours or days instead of years.

New Weapons Against Superbugs

The AI system trained on the chemical structures of existing antibiotics. This training helped the model learn which features make a molecule effective at killing bacteria.

Researchers then used the AI model to screen more than 45 million chemical structures.

The goal was to find new compounds that could target bacteria responsible for serious infections, including Gonorrhea and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

Both bacteria are known for their strong resistance to available drugs. In many cases, doctors rely on a limited number of last-resort antibiotics.

The AI approach helped scientists discover two promising new compounds that could fight these infections.

Designing New Medicines With AI

Researchers used several AI techniques during the project.

In one method, scientists started with an existing molecule and allowed AI to modify it step by step. The algorithm added atoms, chemical bonds, and structural elements to improve its antibacterial activity.

At each stage, the AI system evaluated the molecule and predicted whether it might work as an antibiotic.

In another method, researchers allowed the AI system to design molecules completely from scratch. This approach enabled the model to explore new chemical structures that scientists may never have considered.

A New Era in Medicine

AI-driven drug discovery is now expanding beyond antibiotics. Scientists are also using it to study thousands of rare diseases and complex neurological disorders.

Many researchers believe artificial intelligence could dramatically shorten the time needed to develop new medicines.

If successful, these technologies could lead to treatments for conditions that doctors once believed were untreatable.
