A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu has claimed the lives of at least 25 people and left several others injured. The tragic incident occurred in the Virudhunagar district, a region known for its firecracker manufacturing industry.

The blast took place at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry during Sunday evening. Although the factory was officially closed, around 50 workers were reportedly present inside the premises at the time of the explosion. This unexpected presence has raised serious concerns about safety compliance.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene and began rescue operations. However, the situation worsened when a second explosion occurred during the rescue efforts, injuring 13 more people. Fortunately, none of these injuries were reported as life-threatening.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the blast. Investigators are currently examining the site to identify possible triggers, including negligence or safety violations.

According to eyewitness accounts, several workers were gathered near the factory’s front area when the fire broke out. The flames quickly spread, causing multiple explosions that destroyed parts of the building and reduced several rooms to rubble.

Rescue operations became extremely challenging as firecrackers continued to detonate inside the facility. Despite these difficulties, teams managed to complete the evacuation and recovery process.

Law enforcement agencies have filed a case against the factory owner and the foreman. Both individuals are currently missing, and special teams have been deployed to locate and arrest them.

Officials are also working to identify the victims. So far, most of the deceased have been identified, with many reported to be women. Due to the intensity of the explosion, some bodies were severely burned, making identification difficult.

Incidents like this are not uncommon in India, where the fireworks industry operates on a large scale. Firecrackers are widely used during festivals, weddings, and celebrations, but safety standards often come under scrutiny.

Preliminary findings suggest that the factory may have violated operational rules by functioning on a day it was meant to remain closed. Authorities are now investigating further to uncover additional safety breaches.
